Letter from Projek Dialog

Today, Sr. Jackie received an email from the Yana Rizal coordinator of Projek Dialog, the group of young artists who visited us on Friday, 15 January 2016. Here are the contents of the beautifully written email.

Subject: Projek Dialog visit to Our Lady Fatima Church, Kota Bharu
Dear Sister Jackie,

Thank you so much for arranging our visit and the church's hospitality to our group of artists. Many of us were very heartened by the church's reception, and the community who was very welcoming towards us. The service would have been a first for a majority of the group (including Robb from the Canadian High Commission, who is a Buddhist). It was an eye-opening experience to see first-hand how worship is done in the church, which focuses a lot on the joyous praise of God.

We appreciated Father Francis Andrew's candid sharing with us, attending to our queries on everything from the Catholic  faith, systems and rituals, to his own personal experiences. Particularly what stood out was the thoughtful slide presentation by the church, which really gave us a good sense of the history, community and camaraderie among the Catholics in Kota Bharu.

It was good to observe how the Catholic practice is also evolving over time (as evidenced by the altar girls), and I believe through these visits there will always new things to learn, appreciate and exchange with other faiths.

We are looking forward to the art exhibition in late February, which is set for the National Art Gallery in Kuala Lumpur. We would love to have any of the church community members there, if you are able to make the visit. The exhibition will be open for all.

Thank you once again for kindly accommodating us, and we do hope to keep in touch for perhaps future collaborations and visits. We hope our brief visit was as much a pleasure to you as it was for us.

(Also the refreshments were absolutely delicious!)

God bless.

He gave a very interesting and convincing introduction to teaching catechism and briefly demonstrated how to prepare a sample catechism lesson. Among the volunteers were 3 youths who answered the call of Fr. Andrew and Gina Sanchez Lai (Catechetical Coordinator) to help out. They will be paired off with other experienced teachers. Catechism classes will begin after mass from 10.15 am to 11.15 am.every Friday.

Three Brother Priests Concelebrating Mass

This morning, we were fortunate to have 3 brother priests concelebrating our weekend mass. Main celebrant was Fr. Jude Miranda from Taiping, Fr. Michael Dass (our former parish priest 2003-2004) and our own parish priest, Fr. Francis Andrew. In his homily, Fr. Jude Miranda encouraged us to follow Jesus faithfully as given in the Gospel reading today. (Luke 1:1-4; 4:14-21) Jesus knew his Identity at his Baptism, he had Vision, and he set out on Mission, and He carried out his work with Passion. We are reminded that we are sons and daughters of God, and we are one in the spirit of Christ. "We should not be afraid to respond to God's call to use our God given talents to serve God and to build his Kingdom with Passion!" he concluded.

Projek Dialog with Fr. Francis Andrew

This morning, 8 young artists from Kuala Lumpur together with their sponsor from the Canadian  High Comission,  attended the weekend mass to see for themselves how Christians, in particular Catholics worship. After the mass, they were shown around the church compound by Sr. Jackie and then treated to breakfast with some of our youths and young adults together with Fr. Francis Andrew. The group asked many questions in the informal dialog. After breakfast, they had a question and answer session after reviewing a short presentation of the church history, traditions and activities, Some were curious about our faith and what they heard about the Catholic church, eg. exorcism and how it was done. Before they left, a group photo was taken. The group of young artists will later proceed to visit the oldest mosque from Kampung Laut at Nilam Puri, and hold dialog sessions at the Hindu and Sikh and Buddhist Temples. Among them were a Muslim, Buddhists and Atheists. We hope that this Projek Dialog will encourage more young Malaysians to open their eyes to other religions so that they may be able to understand, and learn to live in peace and harmony with one another.

He gave 3 words to the parish to observe and reflect and carry out, 1. Discipleship 2. Mission  3. Mercy. "We are all called to be Missionary Disciples of Mercy!" he exhorted the congregation.

He presented  tokens of appreciation to the Bishop Sebastian for being our parish administrator in the absence of the parish priest, and also to Archbishop Emeritus Murphy Pakiam.
